- Talk with your child: Ask your child what he/she likes and dislikes about school. Find out what he/she finds easy and hard. You will have received the report card. Go over it together. Be sure to provide lots of praise and encouragement. Do not focus on the lowest grade. Following the conference, be sure to talk with your child again.
- Make a list of 2-3 important questions: Is he/she turning in homework? What are her strengths and weaknesses?
- Work with the teacher to set realistic goals for the school year.
- Take a cooperative attitude: Both teacher and parent need to be positive and demonstrate respect for each other. It helps to maintain a sense of humor! We should avoid blaming and making judgments. We should concentrate on making a joint plan of action to resolve any problems. The child benefits from knowing that his/her teacher and parents are working to help him/her succeed.
